Metroscape Helsinki
How is Greater Helsinki going to look like in the year 2050, with about 700,000 citizens more than today? In december 2006, the 14 local authorities of Greater Helsinki region and the Finnish Ministry of the Environment invited to an international ideas competition, titled "Greater Helsinki Vision 2050". A team of urban and spatial planners at the HafenCity University Hamburg (team leaders: Prof. Jörg Knieling, Prof. Michael Koch) won a purchase of EUR 20,000 for the entry "Metroscape Helsinki". Their concept intends to establish concentrated settlements in the suburban area of Helsinki, and to connect them to a well‑developed infrastructure. This allows to come up against the population increase in a flexible, climate compatible way.
